Dr. Michael J. Gerson: Shades of Life - 20 November
Exhibition Text
For over five decades, Dr. Michael J. Gerson has embarked on a singular quest to explore the most complex terrain on Earth: the human experience. "Shades of Life" presents the profound visual diary of a photographer who is also a practicing family psychologist, revealing a world where the camera is not a barrier but a bridge.
This exhibition chronicles Gerson’s passage from the streets of New York and London to the vibrant markets of Tanzania, Eswatini, and the Republic of Georgia. His true destination, however, is not a place on a map but a moment of authentic connection. Armed with a psychologist’s trained eye, Gerson practices an art of quiet observation, capturing what he terms “candid people portraits,” natural and unposed.
At the heart of his work is a powerful belief in non verbal communication. As Gerson states:
“I have learned a long time ago that there is no language barrier when it comes to photography. Communication is through facial expressions and the language of body movements, both of which talk clearly and articulately.”
This philosophy animates every image. From the welcoming smiles of Cairo to the serious frowns of Tbilisi, his photographs are testaments to a silent, universal dialogue that reveal both contrast and connection. They explore how different worlds mirror one another through gesture, rhythm, and emotion, even when divided by culture, economy, or geography. These images are more than documentation; they are the result of a lifetime of passion for both people and photography. They invite us to expand our own perspectives, reminding us that our most essential journeys are those that lead us to one another.
This exhibition presents two distinct bodies of his work, juxtaposing the expansive landscapes of rural communities with the intricate architecture of New York City. Through this dialogue, Gerson invites a psychological comparison of place, asking us to consider the inner worlds that emerge from different environmental conditions.
Dr. Gerson lives and works in New Jersey and New York.
